One of the most rare and sought after barley shochu in Japan, Hyakunen no Kodoku means “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and is named for the famous novel. It is made from a mash of 100% barley, grown locally on the distillery’s own organic farm, white koji to keep the flavor smooth, distilled at normal pressure to preserve oils, then aged undiluted in oak casks for three to five years to help it develop structure and fullness. Elegant and intense, with nuances of oak and cigar. Uniquely smooth with a concentrated flavor, with layers of coconut and fragrant barley. Sweetness becomes more pronounced when mixed with water, with various aromas that blend into a pleasant yet complex flavor. Mixing with hot water adds more body to a bouquet of various flavors.
About Kuroki Honten Co. Ltd.
Kuroki Hoten has been producing shochu since 1885. They have established themselves as a trailblazer in the industry by introducing many critically acclaimed shochu such as the aged barley shochu Kodoku no Hyakunen (literally “One Hundred Years of Solitude”), one of the most well known and sought after barley shochu in the world. The company motto “shochu-making is agriculture” informs everything they do. They take great pride in growing all the ingredients for their shochu themselves on their own organic farms, even using the byproducts of shochu distillation in fertilizer to continue the cycle. Each shochu they produce retains the true character of the base ingredients and natural flavors of the Miyazaki soil and landscape they come from.
